Talkin' 'Bout My Generation by Sparky December 15, 2000 One of the things that has troubled me as of late is my generation. The generation that is referred to is the group of people currently aged 15-21 - whether or not this is a "generation," so to speak, is irrelevant. These people, for the most part, disturb me. It frightens me to know that the people that I've grown up with are going to be leading the country and the world in the decades to come. The overwhelming majority of the kids that I've come in contact with over the past few years are apathetic monsters. They don't care about school, they don't care about themselves, and they don't care about their future. To dissect the three aforementioned attributes... Kids don't care about school. Why is it that so many kids decide that ditching school on a fairly consistent basis and/or not caring at all about their grades is the right thing to do? What could possibly be more important than school at such an age? You're a fool to tell me that getting high, going to a mall, getting trashed or any other alternative is better than going to school. You're a fool to tell me that the sole point of going to school is to see and gossip about other people with your friends. An education is the gateway to future success. The kids who don't care about school (all too many) are living for the moment, and not thinking about the long run. Instead of channelling their energies into studying, they instead take the easy way out and have fun. Who wants an incompentant oaf for President? Kids don't care about themselves. Why is it that so many kids decide that injecting themselves with various chemicals is the right thing to do? I can't tell you how many underage kids are smoking or drinking... why? Are years of anti-smoking and anti-drinking education not enough for them? Aren't the slides of black lungs and dilapitaded livers enough to sway the youth from smoking and drinking? The smokers say that smoking is a way to relieve the many stresses that they have to put up with during the day. How did the these kids put up with stress before they turned to smoking? The drinkers say that drinking is a way to loosen up and have fun. How did these kids have fun before they turned to drinking? The druggies are the worst of all - they're the scum of the earth. The person who wants to risk their life in order to "see" purple cats and singing elephants are ignorant sheep. Let's not forget about the insane prices of living a life of drugs, either. A druggie essentially throws his life away once he turns to drugs. Who wants a self-deprecating burnout for President? Kids don't care about their future. This point ties together the previous two points. The kids that don't try in school and turn to a drug of some sort in order to get through the hardships of their days aren't going anywhere twenty years from now. Getting rid of such a significant percentage of the population leaves a smaller group of people in comparision to lead the country in the future. Even then, there are those left that care only about money or love as opposed to their overall well-being in the long run. What most kids these days fail to take into account is where they'll be forty years from now. Too many live by "carpe diem," whether or not they can pronounce it correctly. Who wants somebody who can't envision Tomorrow President? What further disturbs me about my generation are two factions: the sheep and the rebels. While it is true that both groups have had representatives in generations past dating back to the dawn of mankind, it is these modern-day factions that get me going. The Sheep How many kids do you know that tune into MTV 24 hours a day, dress from head to toe in Abercrombie & Fitch clothing, and have the constant need to carry a cell phone or pager with them? These are the sheep of my generation. These people are generally ignorant and are, for the most part, incapable of making any type of important decision on their own. They need and are told what to like and to do. They are stripping away from the individuality that makes the world go around; it's hard to tell these people apart form each other. The need to tune into MTV is nothing more than the need to see what types of music are acceptable to buy in order to be "cool." The constant need to keep in touch with their friends (and drug dealers?) makes them completely dependant upon others. The need to dress like others makes sure in their minds that they're up to date with what's "cool," so they don't fall into the ever-so unfortunate situation of being different. Members of the youthful global society are slowly coming together to form one massive conciousness - The Sheep. The Rebels There is a counter-faction for every faction out there, and so there exists the rebels of my generation. These people are equally ignorant (not to be confused with the word "intelligent") as the sheep, but for different reasons. The rebels that I speak of are those that don't give a flying fuck as to what others think of their absolutely trashy and immoral behavior. I know far too many of these people. These people either do drugs, drink on a regular basis, have frequent run-in with cops, are too promiscuous for their own good, don't have a job, don't try in school, or a combination of several or all of the characteristics. There are two sad traits to these people, the first being that they are normally quite intelligent. They have the opportuntity to transform themselves into productive members of society, but for some reason choose to turn to a life of filth and take anti-everything viewpoints to establish themselves as different. What these people fail to realize is that there are other, harmless ways to set themselves aside from others; they also don't realize the irony that their rebellion is actually quite conformist, seeing how there already is a sizable portion of the population that can be labeled rebels. The second sad trait to this is that other, "normal" (meaning non-sheep and non-rebels) people take to liking these individuals, whether it be as friends or romantically. How a rational-thinking person can identify with these out-of-touch miscreants is beyond my comprehension. The so-called rebels act ridiculously outlandish, only to inexplicably generate positive responses from their sickening behavior from others. The rebels crave attention, and the way that they get it is through their ludicrous conduct. God forbid if they don't draw any attention...
