Is the glass half empty or half full?
April 28, 2001

Is the glass half empty or half full?
Name:
Email:

This question has been debated long and hard. For decades this question has served as a method of discovering one's tendencies toward optimism, pessimism, and general outlook on life. I decided that, by leaving the question open to my visitors, perhaps I would get a few (hopefully many) good answers to share with everyone. I feel that no one can be wrong, really, but there are certain criteria that I consider before simply adding an answer to the list. I cannot identify these criteria exactly, but I can tell you that some characteristics I look for in an answer are that it is reasonable, well thought-out or explained, or, sometimes, just funny. Sometimes I'll add an answer anyway; I just have to like it. That said, feel free to send me your answer! The most recent answers are on top, and answers are otherwise in no particular order.
Just so you know, I barely edited the content of this response, or these responses, I should say. (You know, grammar, spelling, capitalization, if anything needed to be changed. Of course, if something needs to be changed, that's my opinion, because it's my page. So hah.)

It's irrelevant whether the glass is half full or half empty. It's twice as big as it needs to be.

The correct answer: "Dammit, I ordered a cheeseburger." (Note: A shiny nickel if you identify the allusion. I identified it, but I had the help of a search engine.)

  1. Why does a glass have to be the medium in determining a person's outlook on life?
  2. If the glass is half empty, then I need to refill the drink. It's O'Charley's policy!
  3. The liquid is always there; even after is indulged, it [is still there], and like people the liquid will "always be with you." Hence, the glass is always full. I am an optimistic-realist, but [I] am known to be a liquid rights activist. Liquids - no matter what state of matter they are in - are entitled to rights, same as human beings! If you ask nicely, I will give you the paper I wrote on how we are cruel to liquids - from their birth and how we genetically engineer them into what we deem "refreshing."

glug-glug-gurgle-slurp-glug-gulp... Wait, what was the question?
- Rebecca Johnson

What do you mean? I was told back when I was a wee lassie that liquids of most sorts were for consuming, not inquiring, silly! Just drink it all so it will obviously be empty. Then you have no problems and you can move on with your pick up stick licking. Eat more pickles.

Neither. My glass is currently empty, but I am on my way to the fridge to fill it up. (note the optimism... I have nothing to drink, but due to self-reliance and motivation, my thirst is well on its way to being quenched.) Another answer, and the one I usually answer with: I have half a glass. I have never answered "full" or "empty" to this question, for the record.

I think the real question here is, "What is in the glass?" Is it water, fruit punch? Is it laced with anything? Will I die if I dring it?
- Matt Falkenberg

I hate this question. It's obviously both! I just say whatever comes out of my mouth...
- Claire Ragsdale

Who cares? Just drink the life-sustaining liquid.
- Nick Disabato

This isn't my glass! My glass was full! And it was a bigger glass!
- Mike Gavin

The glass is half full, and I'm looking forward to drinking the rest of it.
- Neil Coons

I just want to know who the hell drank the other half!
- Walter Ham

It is both half full and half empty *pause* because half is gone and half is left.
- Max Seckel

I know this going to sound like a bunch of superfluous bullshit (which it probably is), but here's my take on things: the glass is always filling, and at the same time, the glass is always getting bigger. Sure, at times it may seem like the glass is either half empty or half full, depending on the circumstances at the particular time, but the truth of the matter is that blessings are poured into our lives everyday, and consequently the opportunity for things to get screwed up increases. Life is never at a stagnant point where you could actually say that something IS this way, because it won't stay that way for long. In my opinion, a true optimist isn't someone who can look at a situation and say that everything's okay - a true optimist is someone who can recognize the tragedy in a situation, yet still look forward to the blessings of the future.
- Brad Barfield

There is no glass.
- Hideaki Omuro

Half full of course! Empty means not there. Can you really have half of emptiness?
- Emily Hunter
